Eleven young children and three staff members pose in one of the rooms of the War Emergency Nursery in the Salvation Army building at 815 Buffalo Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in 1944. Two of the little girls sit in a toy wagon; another girl stands with a doll buggy; and several boys are seated on tricycles. The day nursery, which first opened November 30, 1942, was established by the Salvation Army to care for children of mothers working in defense industries in Manitowoc. It was the first daycare project in the city. With a capacity for twenty-five children, the nursery operated six days a week from 6:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. City welfare agencies, the Junior Service League, the Girl Scouts, and other organizations donated equipment, toys, food, supplies, funding, and volunteer help for the nursery. This picture appeared in the July 15, 1944 issue of the Salvation Army publication The War Cry (Central Territory edition). The adults standing behind the children are identified as Major F. Allmon, Envoy Sedgwick, and Lt. DeRuyter.
