Fashioned from a 9"x 12" sheet of heavy stock paper folded to form four pages, an invitation to the U.S.S. "Macabi"(SS 375) commissioning party features the submarine's battle insignia in color on the front and a party timetable and list of the officers and crew inside. Identifying the "Macabi" as "Her Ladyship...Queen of Submarines" and grouping the officers and crew as "The Queens Court," "Dukes," "Earls," and "Knights," the invitation sets a courtly theme for the party. The "Macabi" was one of twenty-eight submarines built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Her keel was laid May 1, 1944; she was launched September 19, 1944; and she was commissioned March 29, 1945. The commissioning party was held on Friday, March 23, 1945 at Martin Ouker's Silver Lake Hotel (also referred to as the Silver Lake Resort or Silver Lake Lodge), located about four miles west of Manitowoc on Route 151. According to the book "Fresh Water Submarines: The Manitowoc Story," by Rear Admiral William T. Nelson, commissioning parties were financed by proceeds from slot machines purchased by submarine crews and installed near the Ship's Office at the Manitowoc shipyards. Other sources say that the Navy paid for the parties. The "Macabi" cleared Manitowoc on April 18 and did lifeguard duty in support of air operations in July and August 1945 at the end of World War II.
