Manitowoc Savings Bank, South Eighth and Jay Streets, around 1927. This building replaced an earlier brick structure that was the original bank building. This four story building features a granite exterior in a Greek neo-classical design, with a full marble interior. Note the clock on the corner which was a common feature during this period. The courthouse dome can be seen in the left rear of the photograph. The bank was founded by John Schuette who sold his portion of Schuette Bros. to his brothers and started the bank, the electrical company, and Oriental Mills. It was founded in 1884 with $50,000 capital and a $30,000 surplus. By 1887 the capital had grown to $100,000. Many Schuette family members worked in the bank.
