Wearing dresses and shirts typical of the 1940s, young girls and boys sit on the steps of a home at 927 South 12th Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in October 1942 as they pose for a group picture. Two older girls or young women sit on either end of the second row of children. A sleeve holding negatives of this and other views of the same event is labeled "Mary Ann's birthday party, October 8, 1942." The photographs were taken by Francis M. Kadow. According to the 1942 Manitowoc city directory, this house had four dwelling units, one of which was occupied by Mary Kadow and two children. Mary was the widow of Thomas M. Kadow, who had died the previous year. Mary Ann was probably her daughter.
