Eleven of the twelve young women who comprised the staff of "The Sojourner" in 1945 pose behind two tables in their office at the Two Rivers School of Vocational and Adult Education, East Park and 18th Streets, Two Rivers, Wisconsin. "The Sojourner" was a unique monthly newsletter that was published in Two Rivers from April 1942 through December 1945. Its purpose was to provide Manitowoc County servicemen, particularly those from Two Rivers, with news from their home town, and also to provide a forum in which local military personnel could keep in touch with each other through letters that were printed in the paper. The newsletter was mailed monthly to more than 600 Two Rivers servicemen stationed all around the world. The newsletter was created and published by a group of young women -- mostly girls -- from Two Rivers who called themselves the "Civic Understudies." They also kept the ever-changing mailing list up-to-date. The printing instructor from the Two Rivers School of Vocational and Adult Education served as an "advisor" for the paper, although it was not an official school publication. Initially, the Civic Understudies did their own fund-raising to start the publication. Later the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post provided additional support. In this photograph standing left to right are Kathleen Dufano, Gertrude Kaminsky, Gertrude Doncheck (editor), and Rose Marek. Seated left to right are Gladys Schaden, Jeanette Bonfigt, Anita Tegen, Ruth Feuerstein, Marjorie Stanull, Maryon Lintereur, and Marion Wyzinski. A twelfth staff member, Marie Klein, was not present when the picture was taken. This photograph was published in the final December, 1945 issue of "The Sojourner." All 38 existing issues of "The Sojourner" are available in full text on this web site.
