Benke took many school class pictures in natural settings in the 1890's. This June 8, 1899 photograph shows a class from the District II school in Gibson, Wisconsin. P. Federspiel is the teacher. Note the serious expressions, especially that of the stern lady in the black dress to the left of the picture. The slate says, "Go forth into the woods and listen to nature's teachings."
