Members of Neenah's Company I lounge on the Washington School grounds. The first organized military unit in Neenah since the Civil War was formed in 1899. In 1902 the unit became a part of the Wisconsin National Guard and was designated Company I. Company I served on the Mexican border from June 30, 1916 to January 19, 1917. The company was then mustered into the 32nd Infantry Division and was shipped to Europe to fight in World War I in January 1918. The unit returned home in April 1919.
