This 4" x 2.5" card mailed to Manitowoc resident Alfred R. Williamson is an example of the initial Selective Service notices of classification issued by Local Board No. 1 in Manitowoc after the draft was instituted in 1940. Under the Selective Service System local boards registered, classified, and delivered draftees for induction. This card, which was mailed May 21, 1941, classified Mr. Williamson, who worked at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, in Class II-A, an occupational deferment for critical civilian work. Selective Service deferments were made on an individual basis, not membership in an occupational group or employment at a particular plant. In 1945, Williamson was briefly re-classified to I-A, "fit for active military service," and then to 4-A with an age deferment.
