A photograph taken March 27, 1943 shows businesses on the eastern end of the north side of the 1100 block of Washington Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The building second from the right, with an awning and a large "V" in the window is the Victory Barber Shop at 1106 Washington Street. According to a Manitowoc Herald-Times newspaper article from February 11, 1943, the new red, white, and blue neon "Victory" sign had been installed in February by new barbershop operator Elmer Krause. The business had previously been called the DeLuxe Shop. Other buildings, from right to left, are the Maresch Shoe Store at 1104 Washington Street, Victory Barber Shop at 1106, Furmodes Inc. Furrier at 1108, Danish Dairy at 1110, Belmont Bar at 1112, Boelter Jeweler at 1114, and the Mikadow Theater with its marquee at 1118. Parked cars line the curb in front of the buildings, facing west, and two women walk on the sidewalk in front of the shoe store. This photograph was taken from Washington Park, across the street.
