A new metal flag pole was dedicated on May 11, 1942, on the east end of the Civic Center. This photograph is looking west from in front of City Hall, and the Police headquarters and the Courthouse are visible on the north side of 56th Street. In the early days of the Civil War, a tall wooden flag pole stood at the east end of Market Square, and was called the Liberty Pole.
