Published in the September 19, 1942 edition of the Manitowoc Herald-Times over a caption "Chow -- Not a man in the ranks can refuse the wiles of a hostess equipped with cake and coffee," this photograph shows two USO hostesses serving cake and coffee to five uniformed sailors in the kitchen of the USO Club in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. The USO club was located at 901 York Street in a building that was previously a "bachelors' club house." Facilities included a lounge, a game room, and a kitchenette. Soft drinks, coffee, sandwiches, and cake were available along with other food donated by churches and community organizations, and on Sunday nights a "substantial supper" was served. Sailors stationed in Manitowoc for training attended the club, along with Coast Guard and Army personnel. Local women and girls staffed the club in shifts of two as volunteer hostesses, supervised and selected by a local USO board.
