This photograph of the Allen Tannery fire, that occurred on July 13, 1943, was published in the Kenosha News. The structure, erected in 1901, was formerly the center of the nation's largest tanning industry. The four-story brick building was located at 52nd Street and Sixth Avenue. In 1890, a disastrous fire destroyed the original Allen Tannery and the company rebuilt at once at the location on Sixth Avenue and 52nd Street. The tannery went out of business in the early 1920s and the buildings were used by other companies.
