Boys and girls pose in and around a four-wheeled cart drawn by two ponies in front of the porch of a home at 927 South 12th Street in Manitowoc, Wisconsin in October 1942. An older man wearing a suit and hat stands beside the cart, holding a little girl. Another young girl sits on a wood and wire mesh fence that extends forward from the side of the house. Behind the fence are boxes of bundled cardboard, probably awaiting a salvage drive. A sleeve holding negatives of this and other views of the same event is labeled "Mary Ann's birthday party, October 8, 1942." The photographs were taken by Francis M. Kadow. According to the 1942 Manitowoc city directory, one of the occupants of 927 South 12th Street was Mary Kadow, the widow of Thomas M. Kadow, who had died the previous year. Mary Ann was probably her daughter, and the man in this picture is probably Mary Ann's grandfather, John M. Kadow.
