This is a 1982 photo of the First Congregational Church in Janesville. Located at 54 South Jackson Street, this church was the first one established in Janesville. Organized in 1845, the first church building was destroyed by a fire in 1867. A new church was built in 1875. The orginal steeple was hit by lightening in the 1930s and rebuilt. In 1940 a copper roof was installed. Abraham Lincoln attended Sunday services at this church when he stayed with the Tallman family in 1858.
