This is a picture of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company’s employee band as they appeared in their first public concert at the Manitowoc Vocational School on April 1, 1942 during a safety program for shipbuilders. It was at this program that they were introduced as the "Submariners" band. During World War I Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company employees had formed a company band known as the "Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company Service Club Band." When World War II started, the company was engaged in building submarines for the U.S. Navy, and a new band was organized among the shipyard workers. The Submariners, under the direction of Milton Detjen, played lunchtime concerts for shipyard employees and also performed at submarine launchings and other special events during the World War II years.
