Program from the April 30, 1942 launching ceremony for the U.S.S. Peto, the first of twenty-eight submarines built for the U.S. Navy by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. This is a 9”x 12” sheet of glossy paper printed on both sides and folded to create a four page 6”x 9” leaflet. The front cover features a nameplate and a line drawing of the submarine superimposed over an outline of Wisconsin and Lake Michigan. The ceremony program is printed on the second page, along with a picture of the submarine’s sponsor, Mrs. Emanuel Lofquist. The third page includes a brief history of submarines and submarine building in Manitowoc. On the back cover are a photograph and description of the “peto” fish after which the submarine was named, and a facsimile of a design from a special cachet envelope that had been issued previously to commemorate the Peto’s keel laying on June 18, 1941. As indicated by the nameplate at the top of the front cover, this program was printed as a special unnumbered issue of the "Keel Block", the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company’s monthly employee newsletter.
