Washington, D.C.: United States. Army. Quartermaster Corps
Summary
Here are the cover, inside cover, and introduction from a sixteen-page pamphlet issued by the United States Army Quartermaster Corps in 1946 for next of kin of deceased service personnel from World War II. The pamphlet gives information about a government-funded program that provided for the return and final burial of service members, including civilians in government service, who had died and been buried overseas during World War II. It also explains other options that were available in regard to final burials, including interment in permanent U.S. military cemeteries overseas. In Manitowoc, the first of the city’s war dead to be returned was Pfc. Paul L. Adams, a Marine who had been killed on Iwo Jima on March 2, 1945. His casket was among 3,257 returned through San Francisco on one ship in March 1948. After military rites at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home in Manitowoc on April 14, 1948, Adams was buried at Evergreen Cemetery. This pamphlet was among several items associated with the Manitowoc County chapter of American Gold Star Mothers.
