Dressed in a white uniform and holding a baton, Rufin Boyd directs the Lincoln High School Band during a community war bond rally at radio station WOMT’s "Town Hall" auditorium in Manitowoc, Wisconsin on May 17, 1943. This picture is taken from behind the band members as they are seated on "bandstand number one" facing Mr. Boyd and the audience beyond. The evening rally was part of a special campaign to sell enough war bonds to "pay" for building and equipping a submarine chaser then under construction at Burger Boat Company in Manitowoc. This evening program, which featured speeches and a spelling bee between men and women as well as performances by the Lincoln band and other musical groups, was broadcast over WOMT and raised $5,000 in cash sales and $35,819 in pledges. The special campaign concluded successfully on May 22, and submarine chaser PCS-1424, termed "Manitowoc’s own fighting ship," was launched June 19, 1943.
