Summary

• This icon depicts the "Panagia Hodegetria" or 'the all-holy [one] who shows the way.' As the name suggests, the all-holy Theotokos (Virgin Mary or Mother of God) points to the Christ child seated on her lap. The original painted wood panel is covered by a metal revetment and only the faces can be seen from the original icon. The icon is located at the Xenophontos monastery on Mt. Athos. The monastery was founded in 998 by the Blessed Xenophon. Most buildings originally date to the constructions during the 11th century under the Abbot Symeon with the help of Emperor Nikephoros III (1078-1081) but have undergone renovations since.
