COLOPHON: "Duck Blind, with writings and woodcuts by Bill Kelly, was published by Brighton Press in the spring of 2013. The text was set in Kabel and printed letterpress on Twinrocker paper by Nelle Martin using our Vandercook No. 219. The woodcuts were printed on Sekishu paper by Michele Burgess and Nelle Martin. The book was bound in hand colored linen with an etching on the cover, printed by Chelsea Herman. It is bound in a chitzu with an inset woodcut. Sonja Jones and Michele Burgess did the binding. Kathi George provided valuable editorial assistance with the text. Jinane Abbadi, Miya Hannan, and Jenny Yoshida Park assisted with production.
This is an edition of 50 signed and numbered books, plus three artist's proof copies."
Bound in green fabric-covered boards with an inset woodcut placed near top-center of front cover. Book issued in a three-panel board enclosure: set on top of center panel, and each side panel folds over the book, covering it entirely. The three-panel board has brown endpapers on interior side and the exterior is covered in a textured beige fabric. A single vertical strip of green and black patterned paper is adhered to front panel and the three-panel board is held together with tied beads that slip into small leather loops on edge of second panel once it has been folded around the book tightly.
"Three years in the making, Bill Kelly's book of woodcuts and writings was inspired by the musicality of language. Studying poet Robert Pinsky's translation of Dante's Inferno, he built his own "selva oscura" (dark forest) through a series of intricate prints and word ruminations. The poetry and prose that make up the text of Duck Blind helped him carve the wood so he could hear his meanings. 'I get an image from the sound of the metaphors,' he said. For Kelly, the writings and images must be seen together..."--Brighton Press 2014 catalog and price list, page 9.
