View of the stunning facade of the Isle of Staffa from a small tour boat, with the entry to Fingal's Cave to the right and a second cave to the left. Fingal's Cave received its modern name, which harkens back to the ancient Irish heroic age, by apparent misunderstanding of the cave's Scots Gaelic name (which was evidently Uamh Bhin, ‘The Cave of Music’), as Uamh Finn ('The Cave of Finn'). Many visitors to Staffa have been unable to approach the island any closer than this, given the dangers posed by bad weather and treacherous currents.
