The North Point of the Isle of Iona is remarkable not just for its dramatic contrasts of sea-washed, charcoal-gray bedrock formations and white shell sands, but also for the views it provides of nearby skerries against the more distant promontories and mountains of Mull. Such scenes as the one photographed here have been made famous in paintings by the Scottish Colourists, including F.C.B. Cadell (1883-1937) and S.J.Peploe (1871-1935), in particular. Cadell likened this part of Iona, where he returned year after year, to scenes he had painted in Provence.
