Calum MacLean of Tobermory, the Isle of Mull (1934-2015), talks about growing up on the Isle of Mull and about changes in the island’s character since he was a boy. He was born on the main street in town. There were few luxuries then. All the locals spoke Gaelic, including his parents, but Calum grew up speaking English as his primary tongue. The recording was made in the sitting room of a cabin in Tobermory rented by John Niles and his research team.
