This photo depicts the interior of the catholicon (communal church) of the Koutloumousiou Monastery. The catholicon dates to 1540 and contains contemporaneous frescos, but these were overpainted in 1744. The Koutloumousiou Monastery was founded in the 10th or 11th century. Many buildings were destroyed in a fire in 1497. Thereafter it was rebuilt with the help of Danubian princes and various Greek officials. The monastery suffered further fires in 1856 and 1870 in which many buildings were again destroyed and rebuilt.
