This digital collection contains 13 published books and a wall map providing accessibility to early information about the City Of Berlin and Green Lake County. City and county directories were chosen because of their historical value. Our earliest city directory is the Wright's Berlin City Directory 1858-9. Other city directories for Berlin include 1892, 1898 and 1915-16. The directories list residents with their addresses and occupations and include an alphabetic list of business firms and a street and avenue guide.
Princeton's early businesses are also available. Industrial Review of Princeton has descriptions and listings of businesses in Princeton, Wisconsin at the close of the 19th century.
Three early histories have been included. The History of Green Lake County by John Gillespy is the real gem. Other historians in their studies of this area have referenced this work. It deals mainly with biographical sketches of early settlers. Other histories are the History & Directory of the City of Ripon and Green Lake and Waushara Counties 1869 and The School Quarterly Sketch of "The Geological History Of Green Lake County" 1912.
One group of the early population, which was hard to trace, were those who served in the Civil War. Joyce Stemler's They Went South fills that gap. Joyce's book includes biographic sketches of those who served from Berlin, but this book also serves as an index to Joyce's files that are housed at the Berlin Public Library.
