These drums, being carried by royal Kammu (Khmu') guards in ceremonial attire, were intended to provide musical accompaniment to the ceremony in which a Bodhi tree was planted. It is also important to note that before a royal ceremony is to be held in Luang Prabang the provincial governor summons Kammu to participate. Most of them come from Ban Kaset in the area of Xieng Ngeun (personal communication from Damrong Tayanin, Co-Director, Kammu Research Project, University of Lund, May 11, 2005).
