The interior (nave) of the old catholicon of the monastery of Xenophontos. This photograph depicts Saint Anthony (Antonios). The frescos in the nave were painted by Antonios of Crete (1544); those in the narthex were painted in 1564; those in the exonarthex were painted in 1637. The old catholicon or communal church was rebuilt in the 16th century. The monastery was founded in 998 by the Blessed Xenophon. Most buildings originally date to the constructions during the 11th century under the Abbot Symeon with the help of Emperor Nikephoros III (1078-1081) but have undergone renovations since.
