A brimless Edwardian hat in a bucket shape constructed over a fabric-covered wire form. The hat has a black crepe crown draped in loose folds. The bottom 3" of the perimeter of the hat is wrapped in soft horizontal folds with two large, stylized feathers made of crepe attached at the front side and decorated with a silver and rhinestone pin. When worn, the underside of the lining along the rim is visible. It is covered with crepe and the crown is lined with black silk taffeta. The hat is 9" in height with a 10" diameter and would have sat high on the head. It is likely a mourning hat, "crape anglaise," spelled with an "a" to indicate mourning crape, material specifically used by widows.
