Sometimes only the use of a turban-style head wrap makes it possible to distinguish Lao from Kammu (Khmu'). The woman in this photo appears a bit intimidated by the market atmosphere which reflects the fact that coming to Luang Prabang town is not a very common experience for them. Kammu sell and trade sesame seed, ginger, dried peppers, woven baskets for steaming rice, cotton, firewood and charcoal to the Lao (personal communication, Damrong Tayanin, Co-Director, Kammu Research Project, University of Lund, May 10, 2005).
