Nyaheun and Laven women are squatting drinking rice wine (known as "lao hai" in the Lao language) from a large jar using long bamboo straws just outside of the Houei Kong (L-56, XB 6473) water tank in Attapu Province. The occasion was probably the dedication of the new cement apron constructed around the tank. It was built in 1966, but not until 1969 was a cement apron added and a fence constructed in order to keep out village animals, like chickens, ducks and pigs, and to be more sanitary for villager use of the stored water.
