Distant view of the Simonopetra monastery. The Simonopetra monastery was founded in the 14th century by the Blessed Simon. It is named after the founder and his patron saint, Simon Peter, and it is also referred to as Simonos Petras. The monastery is dedicated to the Nativity of Christ. Two fires in 1580 and 1626 and a third in 1891 devastated the monastery. The catholicon (communal church) and many of the buildings were rebuilt after this last fire.
