Mount Horeb Area History

The Mount Horeb Area History Collection brings together a variety of resources depicting the early 20th century in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. Resources include church histories, family memoirs, books about the historic Norway Building, and information about Mount Horeb's production of Song of Norway. Centennial books from the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, Perry Historical Center, and Springdale Township are also included. Complete copies of the centennial books may be purchased from the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, the Perry Historical Center, and Springdale Township respectively.

In addition, the family of Cyril (Cy) Burns generously contributed three negatives of his photographic record of the April 1, 1960 presidential primary speech of John F. Kennedy; held in the Ivy Room above Olson's Restaurant in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.

Cy, as he was best known locally, was born on March 21, 1931, in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. He photographed extensively, capturing the faces that adorn local living room walls, and receiving numerous awards from the Wisconsin Professional Photographer's Association. Cy's work can be viewed today at the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society.

The Mount Horeb Area Historical Society is located at 100 South 2nd Street, Mount Horeb, WI 53572. To contact the Mount Horeb Area Historical Society, please call (608) 437-6486.

Mount Horeb History is a collaborative project completed by the UWDCC and the Mount Horeb Public Library. Mount Horeb History was funded, in part, through a grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) in 2012. These grants provide financial support for public libraries to digitize and make their local library resources available online. For more information about LSTA grants in Wisconsin, contact the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Division for Libraries and Technology or visit the LSTA grant website.
