Alfred Sanford was a history professor and member of the original faculty when La Crosse Normal School opened its doors in 1909. Sanford taught there until his retirement in 1936. He is widely recognized as a brilliant teacher, historian and author. Founder of the La Crosse Historical Society, he co-authored “A History of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, 1841-1900” as well as several high school history and civics textbooks. After his retirement he was president of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1939-1940.
