University Archivist Gilbert Doane examines records in the midst of the archives' stacks. Doane served as director of the Unviersity of Wisconsin-Madison Libraries from 1937 until 1956, and was also director of the UW Library School from 1938 to 1941. He became University Archivist in 1957 and remained in the position until his retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1962. Doane was granted military leave from the University from 1943 to 1945, when he was recruited and served as a captain in the Allies' Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program (known as the 'Monuments Men') to help preserve Europe's cultural treasures.
