View of the Stavronikita Monastery from a distance. The Stavronikita monastery was founded in the 11th century as evident from a document of 1017 that refers to Nikephoros of Stavronikita. It likely comprised of a small monastic house and was later abandoned for a few centuries. In the second half of the 16th century it was upgraded to the full status of a monastery by the Patriarch Jeremiah I (1536). At this time the monastery acquired its walls and was restored. It was since devastated by major fires in 1607, 1741 and others in the 19th century. The small catholicon inside the narrow courtyard was built in the first half of the 16th century but later renovated in 1628. Today, the monastery ranks 15th from the 20 main monasteries on Mount Athos. It also has the smallest footprint.
