The granite falcon is one of a pair that stands at the entrance to the temple of Horus at Edfu, 60 miles south of Luxor. Horus is the hawk-headed sun god. The temple was built by the Ptolemies (237-57 B.C.) and is the most completely preserved temple in Egypt.
