Betsy Whyte of Montrose, Angus, tells a story about fairies, "The Changeling." Because of its length, the story was recorded in two parts of which this is the first. The story, which is set in the time when Betsy's mother was a child, purports to be based on a real incident. The recording was made at a rented house in the royal borough of Auchtermuchty, Fife, for an audience consisting of half a dozen visiting North Americans. Also present was Betsy's husband Bryce.
A transcription of Betsy Whyte telling a version of this story for the musicologists Peter Cooke and Linda Headlee [Linda Williamson] in 1973 can be found in Tocher, no. 27 (1977), 173-75.
A recording of the second part of Higgins' performance can be heard as a separate entry in Scottish Voices.
