COLOPHON: "SEEDTHOUGHTS FOR THIS BOOK BEGAN SOMEWHERE
in the late sixties between Madison and Mt Horeb. We had picked up Paul, stopped for the customary bottle of not expensive Spanish brandy which we worked on while the little green volkswagen filled up with provençal tunes. The performance was hilarious, as much for content & delivery as the total delight Paul took in singing this mirthful deviltry. Many events passed, more books, births, and another visit & then Paul's premature death on 13 September 1971. George Economou, as editor of the translations, sent the manuscript in May, 1974 in the midst of our tree planting which has reached beyond thirty thousand. Work on the book was delayed and made discontinuous by gestation and delivery of our Printer's Devil, then repeated mushroom & berry forages, gardening/canning &c, logs to the sawmill, stone wall building and copious company to say nothing about Mother Nature's free use of tornado, wind, once in a lifetime ice storm & now drought. So as we await the locust, sweeping fire, earthquake with flood we finish this text part after the Solstice & before the Zephyrs. The Notes are in a separate pamphlet for the reader's convenience. There are one hundred sixty five press numbered copies. Numbers 1 through 30 are on our white Shadwell and are for the individual standing patrons of the press. 31 through 35 are oddball copies that utilize variations and proofs. Number 36 on up are on Frankfurt Cream as are the odd copies. This type is Sabon Antiqua from Stempel & of course was/is handset by Mary Laird the itinerant compositor. Roland Ginzel made the title page illustration & it was printed in thirteen different colors within the edition. Except for the hand binding by Kner & Anthony in Chicago, all work was done here at the Minor Confluence in Driftless Wisconsin. Of the entire edition fewer than half are for direct public sale. Copies go as in kind royalty to those most directly responsible for making a book, the author, editor & artist."
Booklet of editor's notes ([11] p.), in pocket at end.
