Captain James Newton was first master in the Gallipolis-Charleston trade. He commanded her on a trip to Wheeling, West Virginia in March 1870 and transferred the West Virginia state capitol to Charleston. She was demolished in an ice gorge at Cincinnati in late December 1872 or 1873
