The simantron of the Docheiariou Monastery hangs suspended on ropes over a balcony. The simantron (sometimes called a talanton though this term is usually applied to a metal version) is used as a call to prayer by a monk who beats the wooden plank with a mallet. The sound produced symbolically represents Noah building the Ark.
