These large cylindrical rolls of hay are witnesses to the importance of hay-making in the economy of the rich agricultural region of Angus. In 1982, when this picture was taken, the harvesting of hay had long been mechanized in regions of open fields like these. In earlier years, especially in the west of Scotland, the situation had long been quite different. Duncan Williamson's father, Jock Williamson, for example, worked each summer as a scythesman at farms in rural Argyll, at a time when hay was cut by hand.
