These market women are offering chili peppers, one of the most important ingredients in Lao cooking. With her small amounts of peppers spread on sheets on the ground, this woman offers a classic example of the lower ranges of market sellers with her "penny capitalism" approach to marketing outside the official area. She is clearly involved in a low cost, low profit enterprise at the margins of the market. See the section on women vegetable sellers in Laos Project Paper no. 18, "Laos Profiles," pp. 172-174.
