These money trees are common temple offerings in Laos, but are reserved for more special occasions due to the expense. The money on them will eventually be used to help run the temple, and if not needed may be redistributed to the less fortunate. These people are ascending the steps to the Phu Si shrine in the center of Luang Prabang. This was on the occasion of the 2,500th anniversary of the Buddha's having attained enlightenment.
