Because of Laos' low population density, it is often possible to let rice fields go fallow in the dry season. This allows the soil to regenerate. A few fields are usually irrigated so that there will not be rice shortfalls. Thatched sheds such as the one here are called "thiang na", and are used to rest and to watch over the rice fields.
