Finishing a disappointing third in the conference behind Eau Claire and Whitewater, the men's golf team was also deprived of a spring season. A change in policy consolidated the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA) District 14 competition with the conference playoffs that are held in the fall. This revision eliminated the customary split season for all teams except the conference champions, who would go on to compete at the national level. Junior Ron Carey, one of the better putters, practiced before a tournament in the spring. Coach Robert Batchelder said he was upset with the consolidation because it prevented UW-La Crosse from offering a spring and fall program to interested students. The year this photo was taken, Eau Claire took conference honors at the La Crosse Country Club with a score of 752. Whitewater placed second with a score of 762 and La Crosse took a close third with 763. Fred Miller led UW-La Crosse with 148, giving him fourth medalist honors.
