This digital collection preserves several dozen journals produced by amateur journalists in recent years using digital technology and saved as .pdf files. It thus complements the very large Library of Amateur Journalism Collection in the Department of Special Collections, UW-Madison Libraries, in which the history of amateur journalism association publications are well represented. Such collections, digital and otherwise, also fit well with other strengths of the Department of Special Collections, most notably its renowned Little Magazine Collection.
The first contributor to the collection, the American Amateur Press Association, or AAPA, describes itself as "a nation-wide non-profit organization of amateur journalists founded in 1936. The purpose of the association is the promotion of amateur journalism and fellowship of amateur writers, editors, printers, and publishers; and the circulation of their work among the membership."
Amateur journalism originated in the 19th century, fueled by the availability of small hobby printing presses, leisure time, and desire to communicate with like-minded enthusiasts. Members of amateur journalism organizations like the AAPA continue a long-standing practice of producing their own journals, then exchanging journal issues with one another on a regular basis through a bundle system.
