A calabash on a rope is tied to a bamboo pole which is secured to the base, a clay-coated tree trunk. The man fills the calabash with water from the river and pours it into a ditch leading into his fields. The weight of the mud on the end of the stick helps to lift the water. This form of irrigation is used throughout northern Nigeria.
