View of Gregoriou monastery from distance. The Gregoriou monastery was founded in the 14th century, but not a lot is known of its early history. Like many monasteries on Mount Athos, Gregoriou experienced financial problems that increased under Ottoman rule. Ioakim Akarnan made some renovations in the 18th century. In the last quarter of the 19th century, the monastery expanded toward the east and doubled in size. At this time, the archondariki (guest-house), some monastic residences, and the marble gateway were built. The catholicon (communal church) dates to the second half of the 18th century with wall paintings (in the nave and exonarthex) completed in 1779 by the painters Gavriil and Gregorios of Kastoria. The paintings in the narthex were added in 1846.
