Summary
Professor Steven Bauman was born in New York, where he studied mathematic and psychology at CCNY. In 1956 Bauman began graduate study in mathematics under Michio Suzuki at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He secured his PhD in 1962 from UIUC with his research focusing on finite groups. After a two-year instructorship at Princeton Bauman came to UW-Madison in 1964, where he stayed until his retirement in 2002. While in Madison Bauman experienced firsthand the political upheaval of the 1960s and 70s, including the bombing of Sterling Hall. Bauman also has a long relationship with university Learning Communities, having been one of the original Bradley Fellows at UW-Madison. He created an assessment used to analyze the quantitative skills of undergraduates which eventually led to the creation of a quantitative reasoning requirement for all students. Later in his career, Bauman became active in labor organization at the University, and he discusses the creation of a the TAA and faculty unions.
