World War II Navy recruiting poster by artist Charles Andres, USNR. Text reads, "Enlist in the Coast Guard SPARS. Release a aan to fight at sea," with a picture of a woman raising a flag. She is in uniform. There are service patches on her sleeve and a pin on each lapel. Her hat reads "U.S. Coast Guard." Along the bottom edge, the text reads, "Apply to your nearest Navy recruiting station or office of naval officer procurement." In small print at the bottom left, "Order No. 20," and at right, "NRB 34901-2-2-43-23500." The creases suggest the poster was distributed as a folded piece. It could have been included inside a newspaper or made available at recruitment offices, post offices and the like. "SPARS, the Women’s Reserve of the Coast Guard, created Nov. 23, 1942 to expedite the war effort by providing for releasing officers and men for duty at sea and their replacement by women in the shore establishment of the Coast Guard." 28" x 42."
